Wix – Why use an agency?

What is Wix?

Wix is a website builder. A service that allows you to create a website with minimal technical knowledge.  Unlike CMS software like WordPress or Umbraco, it’s oriented to handle the setup and configuration of a website with automated steps, so you can concentrate on the basic tasks: adding your content, images and branding. It can even enable advanced features such as selling products using e-commerce or having a members-only area with a few clicks on straightforward wizard-like screens. It provides all aspects of website management, including content management, design, analytics and hosting, under a single control panel with plenty of help to guide you through.

It can be started for free, with paid features added only when you need them.

Non-technical and simple

Above all, Wix provides the ability to quickly choose a template or generate one using AI-assisted steps to craft a look and feel which matches your needs. Once generated, it provides an intuitive interface to drag and drop any element you may want to show, be it text, images or shapes. You can even use the built-in AI tools to generate text and images, as well as add animation effects to make it more attractive.

Small to medium-sized businesses are leveraging Wix (and other templated builders like Shopify and Squarespace) for cost-effective and professional web design and development.

What is not to like?

There are some Shortcomings…

As a wise man said, with great power comes great responsibility. All these tools at your disposal can easily result in an over complicated website with lots of moving parts within a very short time, which may not necessarily provide the interface your business needs to generate leads. Also, often you will need to implement a branding specification which your business follows on all other sales channels and that’s when Wix can be difficult to manage without an understanding of the underlying code being generated.

Wix does a great job providing responsive screens that perform well for different devices but sometimes you need to control where elements appear and how they behave. Then, trying to figure out positioning without knowing the difference between padding and margin can complicate things.

You may also require tweaks to ensure that your website performs well when certain key phrases are searched on Google or Bing. The recommendations you may get from the Google Search Console or from specialist software or services can be difficult to understand without awareness of what goes on under the hood of a website: headers, semantic structures and more.

And when it comes to the big step, adding your own domain so your website goes live, if you wish to retain control over aspects such as DNS or where your emails point, you’re likely to need expert guidance.

Why use an agency?

In the same way DIY can only take you so far when building or repairing a house, no matter how many online tutorials you can watch, a professional Wix website benefits greatly from drawing on the knowledge of an agency. From alt tags and colour contrast to global components and styling themes, only an experienced web developer can truly leverage these for an efficient, high-performing website, ensuring the site remains relevant and functional over time.
